Our Mission

Founded in 2000, we are the SOS charity which takes up the slack where government programs leave off or where there aren't resources, to help community members who “fall between the cracks” through crisis events or hard times by providing basic human needs or whatever will help at the point of need.

Why we do what we do

Many people in the community live one paycheck or one heart beat away from disaster—an unexpected car repair, a health crisis, hours cut back at work, the rent is raised by a new management company or owner taking over the apartment building but wages don't go up to be able to afford the increase, and a hundred other things that happen every day. We believe every member of our community is important, and deserves to have a roof over their heads and enough food to eat. Period.

TRUE STORIES

The “in between times”

Many people struggling to manage all of life's difficulties find themselves slipping into the gap in between paychecks and other sources of income without the financial means to pay their obligations. Here are a few true stories of people assisted during those “in between times.”

Paycheck

He had gotten a job in Bozeman but the first paycheck was 3 weeks away with no way to get back and forth to work—who will help with gas so he can keep his job?

Cancer Treatment

Their 5-year-old daughter has leukemia, but they don't have the gas to get her back and forth to Salt Lake City for her lifesaving treatments—who will provide the gas?

Teeth

He has an agonizing tooth abscess that has gone systemic and he lost his  job because of sickness—who will buy the needed antibiotic?

Soldier’s Family

Her husband's soldier pay has been delayed, and he can't be contacted in the combat zone; there's not a speck of food in the cupboards, she is sick and in pain but can't go to the doctor because there's no gas in the car and there’s no one to watch their two small children.......Who will help in her despair?

Homeless

He has been homeless since arriving in town, walking around and around applying for jobs, his money is gone, there’s nowhere to sleep or bathe, the depression is taking over and he is sitting by First Interstate Bank planning to end it all because no one cares.. ......Who will save his life that day?

Housing

He has been homeless for 9 years and “living” in his van...Who will help him transition to housing after he secured a good job that could support being housed, and pay the Security Deposit, and get him some used furniture and household goods for his studio apartment?

We Will!

The answer is Friends of the Community. We helped all of these people and many thousands of others in their time of need over the last 19 years. Sometimes even saving lives.
